GraffitiBurger.com

Some days you just want a good old fashion hamburger with fries and a Coke, or maybe a milkshake. With all the chain burger joints around Central Ohio, we often find ourselves enjoying someone’s “juicy” square patty or maybe a “flame broiled” round patty or possibly a round patty that has served “billions” all over the world. Good consistent hamburgers with lots of fresh toppings and soft baked buns is what I grew up (and out) with. America is the land of the “Hamburger”. Could someone possibly re-invent this corner stone of our on-the-go society? Well . . . maybe!

“Graffiti Burger” may just have added something new to the Central Ohio burger scene. (Yes, Wendy’s International & White Castle both started out in our all-American Mid-Western city). With four locations (Dublin, Grandview, Pickerington & Clintonville) this multi-store company can’t quite be called a chain yet, so their continued success is certainly dependent on pleasing customers with very high expectations when it comes to their “burgers”. And “Great Burgers” is just what they get served at Graffiti Burgers.

Stacked high with an impressive list of fresh toppings, their 100% Angus beef (never frozen) is served as an irregular shaped patty (like mom’s), hot and very juicy on a fresh bun with a large portion of hand cut French fries. My Angus Burger came topped with sliced mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, pickle and Blue Cheese. Talk about flavorful, and it almost melted the bun it was so juicy. Served in a basket, I had more “crisp” fries than I wanted — and I like fries. We have just about covered the menu. You can have your fries with or without cheese sauce and there are three types of burgers: An Angus Burger, Turkey Burger and a Bacon Burger. I had my usual “Diet Coke,” but their hand-dipped milk shakes really pleased the couple beside me. Flavor choices are easy. Chocolate or vanilla both come topped with whipped cream and a cherry.

There is a little more to this very limited menu. Still just the three types of burgers, but toppings can make all the difference. The “Graffiti Burger” is topped with Cole slaw, special Graffiti sauce, pickles, tomatoes and American cheese. Or you might try “The Sicilian” with Genoa salami, Italian dressing, mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, banana peppers and provolone cheese. For the spice lover, the “Blazin’ Burger” comes slathered with spicy Chipotle Mayo, pepperjack cheese and jalapenos. Their 10 titled burgers include a “Turkey Swiss” for those weary of beef and a “Black Bean Burger” that will impress those going “meatless” in this Mid-Western tribute to the cow.

This review is close to being too long. The detail I’ve saved for last is what pulled me through door on West Fifth Avenue in Grandview. The walls of “Graffiti Burger” are covered with beautiful, high color sprayed graffiti. Community themes, sports teams, local heroes and much more brighten the dining experience. We’ve all seen the “tags” that can blight the buildings and bus stops of our city. But the artists of “Graffititees” use their skills constructively to deliver a spirited atmosphere of fun, family and friendship. I’ve attached several photos for your pleasure, but check out “TheGraffititees.com “ for a better view of their work.

“Graffiti Burgers” is worth the trip. A great burger with fries, a “Coke” or milk shake. The family that left just before me said it all. “ We’ll be back; the food’s great and the kids love it here.”

Restaurant review: Graffiti Burger

Thursday, December 2, 2010 06:00 AM

By G.A. Benton • Photos by Will Shilling

Sicilian Burger at Graffiti Burger Photo by Will Shilling, Columbus Alive! 2010

When the KFC Colonel surrendered his mess hall at Arcadia and High, he left legions of locals hoping for an encouraging change in fast-food regimes. Well, with the recently opened Graffiti Burger, they’ve seemingly gotten just what they’ve been looking for.

Since I live nearby and have been observing marauding armies of eager burger warriors marching into this Clintonville outpost of the Columbus-owned mini chain, I decided I had no excuse but to catch up with a few of its newer menu options (yeah, life is tough!).

By way of background, maybe here I should stress that if you’re a hamburger fan but have never tried a Graffiti Burger, you should go pronto. Why? Well, because they use never-frozen, 100 percent Angus beef and hand-sliced potatoes to make – without question – the best fast-food burgers and French fries you can buy in town (even though they’ve downgraded their puffy, locally baked Auddino’s buns to much more forgettable ones).

After listening to a friendly server extol the virtues of the recently released Sicilian Burger ($5, $6.50 for a half-pounder), I ordered one. It was a salt and grease bomb and a major mess -& amp; #160;in short, a success. An obvious riff on the Mr. Hero Romanburger, the Sicilian added sub sandwich ingredients (salami, banana peppers, Italian dressing and seriously unnecessary mayonnaise) to excellent stoner food effect.

The Buffalo Blue burger ($5/$6.50) was another collision of junk food favorites. This one was literally dripping with vinegary hot wing sauce and studded with lumps of blue cheese. Overall, I liked it, but thought the burger got a little lost in the bun-disintegrating mix (hint: as with the Sicilian, opt for the plenty-big-enough quarter-pound “junior” and order it sans mayo).

For something on the slightly lighter side that nonetheless doesn’t sacrifice real burger character or flavor, I recommend the decidedly nonindustrial turkey burger ($4/$5.50). Unlike many of its competitors, it doesn’t taste funky (note: you can sub in the turkey burger on the Sicilian, Buffalo Blue or whatever burger strikes your fancy here).

Sidewise, the Cheesy Fries ($2.50 for an easily-feeds-two “small”) top Graffiti’s blocky, golden brown and not too greasy french fries with a viscous nacho cheese type sauce that tastes a little bit like melty Velveeta mixed with pickled jalapenos. While I didn’t hate them, frankly Graffiti’s fries are so good on their own, they don’t need the gloppy sauce – it only gets in the way of pure potato enjoyment.

On the other hand, I did observe my dining partner madly mopping up every last drop of thick cheese sauce with every last itty-bitty fry remnant she could find. In other words, in Graffiti’s live-for-today, happy-go-lucky burger world, to each his or her sloppy own.

Childhood Hunger: The Problem
In Ohio, the problem of childhood hunger is very real. Today, there are roughly 500,000 children who don’t know where their next meal is coming from. This is a preventable problem.

The consequences of childhood hunger are profound, both for Ohio’s children and the state. Children who don’t have access to healthy meals suffer, and often have a harder time attending and learning in school and experience a greater number of health and behavioral problems.

Children’s Hunger Alliance: The Solution
Children’s Hunger Alliance is a statewide non-profit agency working toward long-term solutions to fighting childhood hunger.

To achieve our goal, we work with schools, youth-serving non-profits, faith-based groups and child care providers to increase participation in USDA Child Nutrition Programs. In addition, we fight hunger and poor nutrition with education, physical activity information and supplemental resources for caregivers, parents and children.

A Brief History of the Agency
In 1970, Children’s Hunger Alliance started with a single volunteer and a $2,000 grant. Our programs and services now touch communities in every county in Ohio, helping feed the hungry minds and bodies of hundreds of thousands of children each year. We’ve had different names – Hunger Task Force and Ohio Hunger Task Force – but 40 years later, our goal is the same: to end childhood hunger in Ohio.
